The Labor Department's latest Job Report is out: the economy gained approximately 162,000 jobs in March. Some of that is padded by a hiring frenzy (on the order of 48,000) by the Census Bureau -- all temporary, once-a-decade positions -- but still, a gain is a gain is a gain.
Unemployment remains a dismal 9.7%.
Although, in the legal world, staffing agencies appear to be placing more contract attorneys with firms (I'm one of them), which is an alleged indicator that permanent legal hiring is on the horizon. How distant that horizon is, I have no idea, but I constantly have my ear to the ground, and have noticed several associate and staff attorney openings pop up.
Not that I expect a boom, but it's not beyond reason to perceive signs of a thaw in the hiring freeze.
